Educator Brad Cohen and Dr. Tyler Sexton are similar in
many ways. Both Cohen and Sexton were rejected from society at a young age, due
to their disabilities. While Cohen was facing problems with Tourette syndrome
he didn’t give up in life. Even if he was told off by his teachers and bullied
by kids in school he never gave up. He then went to a meeting to see others
with Tourette syndrome and notice that everyone was running away, instead of
trying to make others accept them, they let Tourette take over their lives. Cohen
never gave up and in the end, he was accepted as a teacher, after many
rejections from the principles he was able to find the right one that gave him
a chance.
This is really similar to Dr. Tyler Sexton’s life, but
Sexton suffered from Spastic Diplegia a neuromuscular condition that affects
movement below the waist. It also affects one of his eyes, called a lazy eye.
He was also rejected from society, doctors themselves tells him he would
probably be mentally disabled, and he wouldn’t be able to do anything but
sharpen pencils for a living. Sexton broken many bones trying to walk as a kid,
but he never gave up. Not only did he get taunted by kids, but he was also
discouraged by adults just like Cohen. He had straight A’s but was rejected to
many medical school because of his condition. When he had an interview with a
medical school that doctor told him he would never become a doctor because no
one would go see him. He never gave up and kept applying for medical schools
and got accepted. Just like Cohen he became successful and found a job in the
states and was accepted by his patients there was no one who would reject them
as their doctor because he had a disability.
